Coaching Status & Renewal

Not sure if you have what you need?

Be sure to check our Team Staff Requirements page to know which status you need for the division and role you are coaching.

To check your status, go to your NCCP Locker profile, and select 'Certification'.

If your NCCP Profile says you are Trained or Certified for the context you are coaching, you have fulfilled most of the requirements for your level and role!

Check below to make sure your multi-sport modules are completed and showing correctly.

In the event of a discrepancy between the NCCP Locker and Ringette Canada's coaching platform, the NCCP Locker will always be considered CORRECT.

Equivalencies, pre-requisites, substitutions
Community Sport and Competition Introduction are two different contexts and one does not supersede the other, nor is one a pre-requisite for the other.
  • Coaches do not need to take Community Sport before doing Competition Introduction.
  • A coach at U10 Step 2 must have a Community Sport Trained even if they already have Competition Introduction Trained/Certified.
  • Competition Introduction includes both Trained and Certified, so a coach who requires Trained could have a Trained or Certified status, as Certified does override Trained.

Coaching requirements have changed over the years, so if a coach took something offered in an old system, contact your association coaching director or Ringette Alberta for help interpreting. DON'T ASSUME THAT YOUR STATUS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

"In Training" or "Not Yet Certified" Statuses
This coach has two options:
a. Complete the MED Class and be CI Trained ($45)
b. Complete the CI Evaluation and be CI Certified ($80)

Considerations:
  • Are they likely to be coaching a level that requires the CI Certified status in the future?
  • Do they have a different status for ringette or another sport that also requires a MED Class?
  • Will their association reimburse the $80 if it’s not required for their current level?
  • If there are too many CI Evaluation requests, Ringette Alberta will prioritize those who are coaching at levels that require it

Note: Comp Intro Trained shows the icon info so you know what's missing for Comp Intro Certified. If it says "trained" then coaches requiring a CI Trained status will be approved.

Status Cycle and Renewal
The Maintenance of Certification is the NCCP Policy that requires NCCP coaches to maintain their certification through Professional Development and training opportunities over a predetermined period. The policy provides coaches with credit for attending PD opportunities and promotes upgrading and maintaining relevancy to coaching practices.

Coaching statuses are on a 5-year cycle and are maintained by completing training and accumulating professional development (PD) points. Community Sport is 10 points/5 years, and Competition Introduction is 20 points/5 years.

  • All cycles end/roll over on January 1st. Nothing gets updated until then even if points are completed to renew an expired cycle prior to Dec 31st.
  • Only points collected during the 5-year cycle will count towards renewal - lifetime points don't matter.
  • Expired statuses must be renewed by Dec 15th of the season to be approved.
  • Points accumulated apply to ALL statuses a coach has.
  • If a U14A coach who needs Comp Intro Trained has a valid status for that but an expired Community Sport status, that's ok because the status they need for the season is up to date.
  • Competition Introduction Trained and Certified are two different statuses, so if a CI Trained status is expired but the coach will be completing the evaluation to be certified that will start a new 5-year cycle for the coach.

Getting PD Points
There are lots of ways to get PD points and renew your status.

  1. Go to the NCCP Locker's online learning area and click on any of the courses showing. That will display a description of course content, cost (some are free), approximate duration, and how many PD points it's worth. Most of these can be completed in multiple sittings. The following are required for all coaches so start here if you haven't done them. You could also re-take them as some have updated information and will still be worth points.
    • Coach Initiation in Sport ($15, 5 pts)
    • Making Head Way in Sport (FREE, 5 pts)
    • Safe Sport (FREE, 2 pts)
  2. Self-report
  3. Keeping Girls in Sport is a great option, worth 3 PD points. It has a cost, but the content is valuable for coaches who work primarily with female athletes, as we do in Ringette.
  4. Commit to Kids for Coaches: The Commit to Kids (C2K) for Coaches online training empowers coaches and other sport leaders with practical information to help them enhance child and youth safety in sport. It highlights the importance of understanding boundaries, sexual misconduct, and reporting inappropriate behaviour.
  5. Go to Alberta Sport's calendar to see what multi-sport modules are being offered in the next few months. These are instructor-led, often online, occasionally in person. During Coaches' Week (Sept 15-21, 2025) they are offered with more frequency and often at discounted rates.
    • Coaches at U16AA and U19AA should look at these, as they are required to complete a Competition Development multi-sport module that is new to them each year. Points from that module will count towards renewal. Review the Team Staff Requirements page for details.
  6. Any NCCP Courses taken for other sports will contribute to your Ringette statuses!
  7. Participating in some Ringette Alberta-run development can also add points, including RAB Challenge, RAB Cup, and more!
