See below for answers to common insurance questions.
What insurance coverage does Ringette Alberta provide? | Ringette Alberta members receive $5,000,000 in comprehensive sports liability insurance, along with an inclusive Sports Injury Protection package. |
How do Sports Liability and Sports Injury coverage differ? | Sports Liability coverage applies when a negligent act may have occurred, whereas Sports Injury coverage responds to injuries regardless of any fault or negligence. A single incident could involve both types of coverage. |
Sports Liability Coverage | Even with the best precautions, accidents can still occur. Volunteers, associations, and leagues may face lawsuits from individuals claiming injuries or damages related to ringette operations or events. These claims may come from participants, parents, the public, or others. Ringette Alberta’s Sports Liability insurance protects directors, volunteers, and members by covering claims and legal defense costs. |
Sports Injury Coverage | This insurance ensures participants in Ringette Alberta activities are covered for expenses such as dental treatment, prescription medications, physiotherapy, ambulance services, and more. Full details, including benefits and limits, can be found in the insurance section of our website. For participants who experience serious injuries, additional benefits are also provided. |
Who is covered by Ringette Alberta’s insurance policy? | Coverage extends to all registered members of Ringette Alberta, including Member Association executives, coaches, trainers, officials, volunteers, and players. Membership is confirmed through registration in Ringette Alberta’s database. |
What about new participants who are not yet registered with Ringette Alberta? | New participants are considered day members during their initial trial period (ie Come Try Ringette) and are temporarily covered. They must register as day members and sign waivers before participating. Please contact members@ringettealberta.com for guidance on how to register day members without paying the Ringette Alberta/Canada/Insurance fee. |
Can we host a skills clinic? Are we covered? | General liability coverage of $5,000,000 protects the hosting association. However, instructors must be Ringette Alberta members and receive prior written approval. Participants are eligible for Sports Injury coverage if the clinic is sanctioned by Ringette Alberta, and all participants are registered as full or day members. |
Is our team covered for activities like dryland training, team parties, or wrap-up events? | Yes, as long as the activity is ringette-related and endorsed by your local association. Insurance is flexible, covering non-ringette-specific activities like dryland training (e.g., rollerblading, running, aerobics). Ensure your association provides coverage for the activity, particularly if the venue requires a certificate of insurance. For special events outside typical coverage, contact Ringette Alberta for guidance on additional event insurance. |
Can our team host a parent-child game? | Family members are not registered Ringette Alberta members. All participants must be registered as day members with signed liability waivers. All participants must wear the appropriate equipment - helmet with cage, gloves, etc.
Another option is for teams to obtain their own third-party insurance. All participants must be made aware they are covered by third-party insurance and not Ringette Alberta/Canada insurance. |
As a volunteer on the Association Executive or Ringette Alberta Board, am I personally covered against lawsuits? | Yes, Directors and Officers Liability coverage provides up to $3,000,000 in protection. |
What if alcohol is served at a fundraiser or social event? | Ringette Alberta does not sanction events where alcohol is served.
|
How do I file an accident claim? |
Accident claims must be submitted within 30 days of the incident. Complete an Accident Claim Form (available above) and submit it to Ringette Alberta. Hold on to all receipts until the insurance provider contacts you directly. |
Is wearing protective equipment, such as helmets, mandatory for everyone on the ice? | Yes. Helmets are required for all individuals on the ice. |
