Sports bring people together. They create memories, build friendships, and inspire young athletes to dream big. But the energy of the game isn't just fueled by players—it’s powered by the fans in the stands. At Ringette Alberta, we're committed to fostering an atmosphere where positivity, respect, and sportsmanship is celebrated both on and off the ice.
As supporters, parents, coaches, and spectators, we hold the key to setting the tone for every match. That’s why Ringette Alberta has launched the “Hype, Not Hate” campaign, which emphasizes that every athlete, coach, and official deserves encouragement, no matter which team they represent.
Safe Sport, a nationwide initiative, reminds us that the environment we create around youth sports directly impacts young athletes' experiences and well-being. Safe Sport principles prioritize respect, inclusivity, and safety in all sporting environments. Whether on the ice or in the stands, it’s critical to ensure that sports remain a positive experience for everyone involved.
Research from Safe Sport has shown that negative spectator behavior—such as heckling, verbal abuse, or taunting—does more than disrupt the game. It can harm players' mental health, demotivate officials, and discourage young athletes from pursuing their sport. Positive reinforcement, however, boosts confidence, enhances performance, and helps athletes develop essential life skills like resilience and teamwork.
What It Means to Be a Fan
Ringette Alberta’s “Fans in the Stands” initiative aligns with these principles, offering a clear guideline on how we can all contribute to a supportive and uplifting sporting environment.
Here’s how to cheer responsibly:
While cheering for your team is encouraged, there are behaviors that have no place in sports. Spectators are reminded that the following actions not only harm the game but can result in consequences, such as removal from the venue:
As parents, coaches, and spectators, we are all part of a larger community with a shared responsibility to create a safe and supportive atmosphere for young athletes. According to Safe Sport, children mirror the behavior they observe. If they see kindness, encouragement, and respect, they are more likely to carry those values into their own lives. If they witness negativity, the impacts can be long-lasting.
“Youth sports should be a source of joy and growth, not a source of anxiety,” explains a Safe Sport representative. “Every time we step into the stands, we have the opportunity to shape a child’s experience of sport—for better or worse.”
Ringette Alberta has made it clear: There will be consequences for bad spectator behavior. Negative actions in the stands not only tarnish the spirit of the game but can also result in spectators being asked to leave or facing further disciplinary action. This policy ensures that everyone can enjoy the game in a safe and respectful environment.
Ringette Alberta is calling on fans to become champions of positivity. By cheering responsibly, we can create a lasting impact on our community and ensure that sports remain a place of joy, camaraderie, and inspiration.
Let’s embrace the spirit of the game, support every athlete, and remember why we’re here: to celebrate the incredible talent, determination, and sportsmanship that ringette brings to our lives.
So next time you find yourself in the stands, ask yourself: Are you contributing to the hype—or the hate? Let’s all choose HYPE and make every game a celebration to remember.
